Our national food value chain is reliant on many families in business

The majority of farms near populated areas are small and struggling to support a family as many are a result of larger properties being sub-divided as the cities move outward and land becomes too valuable to farm.

However, there has been an explosion of niche operators who now focus on farm-to-gate markets and direct supply via the internet to try and cover their costs and hopefully make a small profit. These operators can only be viable in the long term if there is more collaboration, alliances and common marketing strategies and opportunities. They will not be sustainable trying to do it on their own.

The G21 Agribusiness board in the Geelong Barwon Region is a dedicated group who aim to add value to farm to plate operators in all segments in the food chain and assist in improving the industry.
