The sudden death of a family business leader is an extremely emotional time for family and staff.

The sea plane tragedy in Sydney this week highlights the need for families in business to engage in difficult conversations about death sooner than later. On more than a couple of occasions I have experienced first hand the fall out from the sudden death of a family business leader.

In the grief and confusions that follows such an event, the remaining family members and senior executives experience all the emotions displayed in the photo below.

My experience in recent times highlights that less than ten percent have sat down and held a robust and honest conversation including all family members about the unexpected death of a family business leader and come to a common understanding on the continuity plan for the business.

Facilitating these conversations is my primary purpose when adding value to families in business.
