A sign of a true leader

William Winter - Thursday, January 02, 2014

As we get ready to start again in 2014 many talk about setting goals for the year. I would like to see a year where management put their brain into gear before they start to blame others for things that go wrong.

I hate it when I sit in meetings and someone starts mouthing off about an individual by name, when a real leader would have more sense and honesty.

When Noah Built The Ark

William Winter - Monday, December 16, 2013

It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark !

Building a strategy for survival and growth is a priority for business right now as who would have predicted the events of 2013 this time last year. So, what will 2014 bring ?

As we end 2013 many businesses I have been exposed to are experiencing mixed results. We are just over 100 days into a new government and, as they lift up the rocks, they are finding a great deal of Government debt and many unfunded programs that were in the pipeline. All this will lead to some tough decisions to be made which will probably have an effect on many business operators.

Combine this with the recent announcements from the auto industry and  the many conflicting press articles that seem hell bent on talking about the negatives and trying lay blame on any moving target they can find. It would seem that business prospects could be unpredictable for a while yet.

Now the focus should be on small to medium enterprises and how they will be the ones who create the new jobs in the future. I see many great SMEs ranging from $2 million to $70 million turnover who have been experiencing better times and are the ones who will build our economy.

The smarter business operators have a plan with an agreed strategy to meet that plan . They regularly revisit their plan to see if it relevant to the changing economic environment . Like Noah, they know that to get to the future you will have to ride out the storms in between.

Why do business managers blame others for their mistakes ?

William Winter - Tuesday, December 03, 2013
Over the years I have always been frustrated in meetings when a topic comes up that is about an issue that's not going to plan or a mistake has been made and some around the table start blaming individuals in an auto response to isolate themselves from the bad news.
I still see and hear this today in meetings and I guess its tells you something about the culture of that business.

The illustration in the link below is a poster I have often used in companies I have been working with.
